Learn to knit the black-based Vilhelmina mittens – a mitten pattern from the inland region of Västerbotten. With their dark background color and vibrant details, these mittens have been knitted in the Vilhelmina area for generations.

The pattern is based on historical original mittens documented by knitting expert Erika Nordvall Falck. The men's size is based on a pair of mittens knitted around 1956 by Ellofa “Ella” Tidström from Vilhelmina, a knitter known for her skilled workmanship and high quality. The women's size is based on mittens knitted by Eivor Vennerberg in the 1960s, following an even older local design.

The pattern shares some similarities with the well-known Arjeplog Rose motif, while also featuring distinctive characteristics that make the Vilhelmina mitten unique. This pattern is intended for knitters who already have experience with colorwork and are looking for a fun and rewarding challenge. Many rounds are worked with three colors at the same time, but thanks to the thoughtful construction of the pattern, long floats on the wrong side are rarely an issue.

The pattern includes clear charts and instructions for both women’s and men’s sizes, along with the story of the mittens, the knitters, and the tradition that has been passed down through generations.
