Sámi design with heart from Jokkmokk

In the centre of Jokkmokk, in the heart of Sápmi, you'll find Stoorstålka – a Sámi design company founded and run by Idja Lotta Stoor and Piera Niilá Stålka. The name is a combination of their surnames: Stoor and Stålka.

– We design products made to suit everyday Sámi life, says Piera. It can be anything from hats, t-shirts and glassware, to wool shawls, yarn and duodji accessories.

Idja Lotta Stoor, a textile artisan, Sámi handicrafter and photographer, brings form and craftsmanship to the business. Piera has a background in IT – and joik – and is the digital engine of the company. Together, they have built a brand that blends tradition with modernity, with their own design line sold in-store and online.

– We started because we missed products that reflected our Sámi taste and aesthetic. So we made them ourselves, says Lotta.

Most of their customers are based in northern Sweden and Norway, but Stoorstålka's design has spread far beyond Sápmi.

– The best part is doing what we love – and that there's space for our kind of design, says Piera.

So what should visitors not miss when stepping into their store?

– Our wool shawls are iconic, says Lotta. And if you've never woven bands before, a band weaving kit is the perfect place to start.
